In response to government plans to introduce phonics-based screen checking for six year olds, we worked with Oxford University Press to develop Oxford Phonics Check Support.

This free software tool is designed to improve reading standards, and support teachers in their phonics lessons throughout Key Stage 1.

After it emerged that England had slipped down the international table for reading in primary schools, the Department for Education pledged to provide high quality phonics resources to teachers and pupils. At the time, 15% of pupils failed to reach the standard expected at Key Stage 1 and 16% were below the standard expected at Key Stage 2. Our Oxford Phonics Check Support tool was designed and developed to support the Department for Education’s pledge.

Using Oxford Phonics Check Support, teachers can quickly and easily generate tailor-made word lists that support the specific learning needs of their pupils.

Teachers can also use Oxford Phonics Check Support to ensure their students are prepared for their phonics exams, by generating example checks that reflect the style and content of the actual phonics screening check.

These examples feature all the appropriate graphemes, word structures, pseudowords and polysyllabic words in the ratios proposed by the check framework.
